Diet Failure

The fact is that about 2-5% of diets actually work in the United States. That means about 2-5% of people actually lose weight and keep it off in the long run in general. These are horrible numbers, and it’s in large part because everybody is dieting. By that I mean that everybody is changing their lifestyle for a short period of time.

This was a big problem surrounding the Atkins Diet.

People cut out all carbs or most carbs at least, and when they had lost all the weight they wanted to, they went back to eating pizza, pasta, and otherwise an unbalanced diet as it was too hard to follow and they had never actually learned about healthier habits that would include greater amounts of fruits and vegetables among other things.

This is the problem of a fad diet. They are too hard to follow in real life, and so while many fail from the beginning lasting only a few days, even those that succeed gain all the weight back because they can’t keep following the diet over a lifespan or long period of time.

Even with a good diet plan that could be followed, many actually have the mentality that a diet is a diet, you use it for a certain period of time and then you go back to your old habits. This is not a mentality that should ever be used. Therefore, you should never diet, but rather make a lifestyle change.

One of the major signs of a fad diet is the complete absence of one group of food. If that group of food is junk food like donuts and cake, you are probably okay. But then again, you should be allowed cheat meals or otherwise times when you can have the things you like so that you don’t fall into the trap of binging later on. But there are a number of essential food groups for a reason.

Diet Failure

You need good fats, you need fruits, vegetables, certain types of carbs, you need all of these things in any kind of healthy diet. So any diet that cuts out one or another is a fad diet and won’t give you lasting results or for that matter healthy results. And if they go to a whole nother extreme of telling you to only eat one food such as the grapefruit diet, obviously that cannot be sustained and it’s a fad diet.

Second, you should watch out for those promising extreme results such as 1 pound of fat every day.

  1. First of all, it’s quite literally impossible to burn off an entire pound of fat in a day or even a couple days.
  2. A pound of fat is equal in size to about a gallon.
  3. So despite what diets like the HCG diet tell you, that is not going to happen.
  4. Moreover, with the HCG diet you are eating a 500 calorie amount per day and exercising.
  5. So in the beginning you should be losing a significant about more than one pound per day, though results will plateau off due to your body’s basic survival mechanisms.

Finally, you should watch out for those with extreme caloric restriction. Your body needs a certain amount of calories each day to take care of its basic needs. Most experts suggest about 1200 for dieting and 2000 on a general basis. However, it depends on the individual person as to how many calories you should take in.

Any way you look at it, you should look for a balanced and healthy diet. The weight won’t come off in extreme amounts, but you will be able to better use that diet in the future and also maintain your weight loss in general. There are plenty of fad diets out there ready to give you prepackaged meals, extreme methods, or otherwise ways that might help you lose weight for a few weeks, but then you will gain it all back. These are definitely not the ones to look for.
